Are you a lover of nature? Would you like to see the Black Madonna that has been worshipped for over 1000 years?
On this tour, we will visit one of the most unique places in Catalonia; Montserrat, which is a breathtaking rocky mountain just an hour outside of Barcelona. At the top of the massif stands the splendid Benedictine monastery, which houses the Virgin of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia. For almost 1,000 years, pilgrims from all over the world have come to worship the Black Madonna, a Romanesque sculpture dating from the late 12th century. The Montserrat landscape is unique in the world, and there are several routes to do excursions.
We will visit the Museum of Montserrat, which is full of surprises. It includes works by renowned artists such as Velázquez, Caravaggio, El Greco, Tiepolo, Monet, Sisley, Picasso, Dalí and Ramon Casas.
Montserrat is the place where one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe sings.
“Montserrat” literally means “serrated mountain” (like the common handsaw) in Catalan. This mountain is also very special from a natural perspective.
Montserrat is nicknamed the ‘magic mountain’ due to the numerous legends it has generated. The first of them is the discovery of the wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. Moreover, documents dating back as far as the 14th Century bear witness to the existence of a religious and musical choir at the Monastery.
The monastery is also on two of Europe’s main pilgrim routes: the Way of Saint James and the Ignatian Way. l’Escolonia de Montserrat.
But why is the Madonna black? What are the geological origins of this rocky mountain? Why is there a Caribbean Island named Montserrat? What are the legends related to this mountain? On your private tour to Montserrat for you and your party, you will discover this and more.
Montserrat is a mountain, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and a jacket.
